Testing BMW...R1200 RT & Moto Morini's Comeback

 BMW R1200RT

The new R1200RT restores the mainstay of the BMW Motorrad essence, the boxer twin powered “R” series models, back to a more appropriate performance level. The new edition of this immortal twin, enlarged to a full 1.2 liter and extensively revised in its thermodynamic section (compression ratio is now an impressive 12:1, highest value even in an aircooled engine) now produces 110Hp at 7500RPM, and 85 ft-lbs torque at 6000RPM.

The First BMW "Boxer" to break the 100Hp barrier. Definitely closing the performance gap with the mulit cylinder “K” series models.

Tipping the scale at 570lbs curb weight, ready to go with a 27 liter tankfull, it outperforms the K1200GT at the lights and at pick-up from just about any speed, while outhandling it on any kind of road, to conquer the title of most versatile and capable Gran Turismo Veloce bike today.

The new R1200RT looks massive, in reality it’s 44 pounds lighter than its sleeker R1150RT predecessor. A fresher boxer twin is very impressive thru the revs range. Proving that there is a lot more in this celebrated engine layout than just the romantic touring pleasure of riding all day to the “boxer twin staccato”.
