The saga of the GSX-R: 20 years already!


1985: Suzuki revolutionized the motorcycle market by marketing a line of motorcycle racing. This is the beginning of a success story ever denied. It will also be the beginning of a competition, that one commercial, between the 4 Japanese manufacturers to offer for sale the bike the best performance, each new model pushes the limits previously reached. The GSX-R1000, last-born of the illustrious family, is undoubtedly a step in this constantly evolving. In 1985, journalists was enchanted to read the figures of the first GSX-R750: 100 hp for 176 kgs! We're at 178 hp and 166 kgs for the latest GSX-R1000 ... In 20 years, Suzuki has produced nearly 650 000 GSX-R, if any proof of the correctness of a concept which will be available in 250 and 400 (for the Japanese market), 600, 750 and 1000 cc.

Presented at the Cologne 84 and marketed in March 85, the GSX-R750 is regarded as the first production motorcycle directly inspired by the race and offered at an affordable price. The hunt for pounds gave birth to an oil-cooled engine, technique as effective and 10% lighter than the conventional water cooling. The aluminum chassis also participates actively in the lightness of the machine, resulting in a motorcycle 20% lower than its contemporary!. Add a hangover endurance machine and you have the keys to success. This bike provides the basis for modern sports bike: in this sense is a true "classic."

Evolution

1985-1987: small changes, like extending the arm of 25 mm or 86 tubes of 41 mm forks and a tank to 21 liters.

1988-1995: softens the line, new engine supercarré, 17 wheels, 112 hp but 195 kgs! In 1990, return to a long motor race, the emergence of an inverted fork, 115 hp for 193 kgs. Selle fairing and reviewed in 91, 116 hp but 208 kgs!
Big change in 92 with an engine cooled by water and oil, redesigned chassis. The weight does not change, but the power to 118 hp. Amendments to the chassis, engine, and the box 93, with calipers 6 piston brakes and a rear tire of 180/55/ZR17. Ten pounds is earned on the balance.

1996-1999: back to basics! Suzuki listening clients, the GSX-R found its roots. 179 kgs and 128 hp thanks to new engine and chassis technology which is directly derived from the 500cc GP: wheelbase 1400 mm, angle reduced to 24 °, supercarré engine, fully adjustable suspension. Appearance of the electronic injection for the year 98, with a few other changes has the power to 135 hp.

2000-2005: the second revolution! Everything is new on this sixteenth model, engine and chassis are completely redesigned, more aerodynamic line, aided by an engine is shorter and narrower, which develops 141 hp. Weight down to 166 kgs. Finally, in 2004, the latest version of the bestseller redesign of the engine now develops 155 hp, online magazine for even more finesse and better management of the forced air intake, radial mount brake calipers and a weight down to 163 kgs. Appearance in 2005 of a series twentieth anniversary with painting specific approved Yoshimura exhaust, tinted bubble, blue chain of transmission, disc brake specific coded ignition key, GSX-R wheels and a protective emblem "20th Anniversary" numbered.
